Psychotherapists Professional psychotherapists are individuals licensed to practice in specialized disciplines: psychology, psychiatry, social work, marriage and family counseling, professional counseling, and so on. Training and experience vary greatly among providers, so it is important to ask your selected therapist about his or her background and specialty training. Fees can vary as well, and most providers negotiate fees. Some providers do not accept health insurance coverage, but provide services for a reduced flat fee.
